No pardon for football idol Popescu

Romanian society has not been left cold by the sentencing of the former national football player Gheorghe Popescu to more than three years in prison. Over 23,000 people have signed an online petition for the 'symbol of Romanian football' to be pardoned. The online daily Gândul denounces the initiative: "If Gică Popescu were pardoned, it would be a clear message to everyone else who has defrauded or tried to defraud the state: steal, and if you're caught, you can get off the hook with a pardon. Pardoning Gică Popescu would be a slap in the face for the judiciary and a moral attack on many prosecutors. In their work they can and must ignore the emotions of the 1994 Fifa World Cup [when Popescu led the team into the quarter finals]. There are neither legal nor moral grounds for pardoning Gică Popescu. The judiciary is impartial, and it must remain so."
