Brittany needs to retain its unique character

After the closure of a large slaughterhouse the protests in Brittany, originally aimed at the introduction of an ecotax on road transport, have gained a new dynamic. That has to do with the region's loss of identity, the conservative daily Le Figaro writes: "Today Brittany is the symbol of those French regions whose specific character and riches were to be erased, to make it fit in with an abstract model of development based on industrialisation. More than any other region, Brittany embodies the marriage in France between geography and history. This marriage resists standardisation and allows our country to offer the world products with a high added value. Germany has its luxury cars? Brittany has its lobster, its oysters, its black and white cows, its pigs and artichokes. ... Jewels that are unparalleled in quality."
