Roman Polanski speaks out

The filmmaker Roman Polanski is attempting to avoid extradition to the US, where he is charged with sexually abusing an underage girl in 1977. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung has printed his open letter: "I can no longer hold my tongue, because for the umpteenth time the court in California has rejected the victim's plea that the proceedings against me be suspended once and for all. I have had enough of being castigated each time the case is rolled out. I can no longer hold my tongue, because an essential fact has been confirmed. On February 26 of this year Roger Gunson, who represented the plaintiff in 1977 and is now in retirement, declared under oath before Judge Mary Lou Villar in the presence of David Walgren, the prosecutor now responsible for the case who had sufficient time to cross-examine him, that on September 19, 1977, Judge Rittenband said to all parties that my imprisonment in Chino constituted the entire sentence I had to serve. ... I can no longer hold my tongue because this extradition proceeding is based on a lie."
