Israel faces national paralysis

The parliamentary elections in Israel have failed to produce a clear winner. This will make the formation of a government extremely difficult, the daily Trouw writes: "If the elections in Israel were already marked by insecurity and the voters' doubts about everything – politics, politicians and threats such as an Iranian bomb – the preliminary results have only exacerbated these doubts. The coalition talks may take a long time and will lead to an unstable right-wing government, with the possibility of a peace process with the Palestinians ruled out from the outset. A conflict with Washington seems inevitable. The alternative – preferred by [Benjamin] Netanyahu – is a government of national unity between the major parties. But this is the kind of government that like many of its predecessors would rapidly decline into a government of national paralysis."
