Poland needs a museum of contemporary art

Polish contemporary art may be enjoying great success in the west, but the country hasn't got a single museum of its own for such art, complains Adam Szymczyk, director of the Basel Kunsthalle, in conversation with Cezary Polak. "We cannot afford not to have such a museum. It is incredible and unacceptable that a major European country has no museum that collects the works of today's artists and makes it possible for the public to come face to face with contemporary works on a world-class level. … Polish painters and sculptors create works, installation artists create installations – and what happens to them? They are scattered before our very eyes. We have no institution that pursues a systematic policy of art collection."
