Nationalism silent on Orthodox Chrismas

Around 200,000 Croatians of the Serbian Orthodox faith celebrated Christmas on Tuesday, and a message of greeting from Serbian Patiarch Irinej was read out in Zagreb. The conservative daily Večernji List sees it as justified that the hate tirade contained in the message of the Belgrade patriarch was omitted: "What was omitted from the message was the statement that the Serbs in Croatia are once more subject to a pogrom, just like they were 20 years ago. This rhetoric, which depicts the Serbs in Croatia solely as pogrom victims while making no mention of the pogroms and crimes committed in the name of the Serbian identity, is exceedingly nationalistic. To that extent it is good that these words were omitted from the liturgy in Zagreb. But they remain harmful for coexistence in our country, and the already fragile ecumenical movement."
