Nokia-Alcatel merger a major challenge

The Finnish network equipment provider Nokia wants to take over its French competitor Alcatel-Lucent for over 15 billion euros. After the experience with the takeover of Siemens' network division in 2006 this merger won't be an easy undertaking, the business paper Kauppalehti predicts: "Finding common ground between the two business cultures won't be simple. Just a few months after the deal with Siemens a huge bribery scandal at that company jeopardised the entire merger. Hopefully we're not in for similar surprises with the French firm. The fusion of the French-American business culture at Alcatel-Lucent and the still partially Finnish culture at Nokia won't take place in the twinkling of an eye. Ultimately it took seven years before Siemens was fully integrated into Nokia. That's far too long to set the objectives of the world's biggest network enterprise."
