Vacuum ban is necessary nannying

The EU plans to gradually take vacuum cleaners with high energy consumption levels off the market starting 2014. The liberal-conservative daily Die Presse defends the legislation as necessary nannying vis-à-vis egoistic consumers: "Everyone should have long since realised that we must get by on a fraction of our current resource and energy consumption if we want to guarantee a good life for the coming generations. ... No, it is not our right to wantonly waste resources just because we were born in the right place at the right time and can 'afford' a power-guzzling vacuum cleaner! If there were a consensus on these two economic principles, political intervention like the EU's Ecodesign regulations would finally be understood for what they are: urgently needed measures for countering a glaring market failure. And when truly fair conditions exist on a functioning market, consumption really is a private affair in which the state has no place!"
