Three cheers for a European Internet

Speaking at the Franco-German Ministerial Council on Wednesday, Angela Merkel once again called for the creation of a European Internet. This could foster not only security but also economic growth, the left-liberal weekly magazine Le Nouvel Observateur writes: "In an economic situation that is critical, to say the least, strong support for the development of digital technology could be a key growth factor. The success of Airbus in the aerospace industry could be repeated in the Internet industry. Of course there are many obstacles to be surmounted, but Europe has enough resources at its disposal. Although it will take several years for the results to be visible, the more we put off launching this political-digital revolution, the more Europe will lag behind the other digital powers. … One can only hope that Angela Merkel's declaration is not just hype, but that she has really found a way to reboot the European engine with a major project."
