Labour must change its relations with unions

The head of the British Labour Party, Ed Miliband, plans a special party conference for the spring of 2014 to give a new orientation to his party's relations with the unions. Among other things Miliband wants to end automatic Labour Party membership for union members. Such a change in direction is risky for the party but essential, the left-liberal daily The Guardian writes: "Labour's aim should be to 'mend, not end' the union link. This is not a fight about whether Labour retains its historic link with the unions; instead it is about how the link can be reformed and strengthened. The party is immeasurably stronger because of its relationship with the unions. .... But the party should seize the opportunity to look again at its decision-making bodies and how the power of under-represented groups can be enhanced."
