Abuse victims not in it for the alms

In spring of this year Austria's Catholic Church set up a commission to investigate abuse in the Church. Until now 193 people have reported cases of abuse to the commission headed by the conservative ÖVP politician Waltraud Klasnic. The daily Der Kurier writes that while the victims are not in it for the money, the Church should not try to buy them off with paltry sums: "Many victims cannot overcome their inhibitions and confide in someone. Some can't even talk about their past with their spouse. But when, like the 193 victims who have registered with the Klasnic commission, they do manage to take the step one day, their immediate goal is not to press charges, see the perpetrators punished or receive damages. What they want is that the truth should finally come to light. They want to be believed, and they want to see those guilty stand up and admit their guilt. Nevertheless the rumoured 100,000 euros that the Church is willing to pay into a fund for the victims - not immediately of course, but only after the Episcopal Conference gets around to approving it - is a shameful alm."
