Greek crisis: Bulgaria must help save Athens for its own sake

Greece is being financed with funding from the EFSM bailout programme until the negotiations for its third bailout are completed. Bulgaria also contributes to the EFSM and will guarantee roughly 0.3 of the loans. This may seem unfair to many Bulgarians but it is in their own best interests to go along with the deal, points out journalist Evgeni Petrov in the daily newspaper 24 Chasa: "Do we really want Greece to leave the Eurozone and perhaps even the EU, suddenly landing us with 493 kilometres of EU external border? Do we want the refugees from Africa and the Middle East to be able to reach that border easily via Greece? Do we want to lose 1.2 billion euros in export trade? … [Bulgaria's decision to co-finance Greece] is the most sensible 'yes' that runs counter to public opinion I can remember in recent times. A 'no' would have been silly and selfish."
