Reversing austerity no solution for Portugal

A round of coalition talks between Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho's conservative alliance Portugal à Frente and the moderate Socialists failed on Tuesday. At the same time the Socialists are making a bid to take over the government of the country with a left-wing alliance. The centre-right daily Diário de Notícias offers the following advice: "Simply reversing all the austerity measures that have been implemented in recent years won't be enough: stopping cutbacks and increasing social benefits and consumption are not a solution; these measures would only lead to another bailout package. … Portugal must find the right path to growth so it can fulfil its obligations and make its own way forward without help from others. Reviewing priorities and recalculating - all this is necessary and desirable. Wasting time on discussions about proposals that can't be implemented and that would destroy the fruits of the many sacrifices in recent years simply doesn't make sense."
