Niklaus Peter on meaningful and dangerous sacrifices

Easter is the time to reflect on the meaning and significance of the term "sacrifice" in daily and religious life, writes Niklaus Peter in the liberal conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "That also goes for the extreme situations we face. Where would we be without the readiness of policemen and women, rescuers and emergency forces as well as army personnel to risk their safety, health, and in extreme cases their lives to prevent something even worse from taking place? ... There is not just one language of life but a plethora of religious, philosophical and literary languages in which experience, symbols, world views and codes of behaviour have become enshrined. What can the Christian tradition contribute here? Perhaps this: the willingness to reflect on the significance of positive, life-giving sacrifices, but also that of dangerous and life-destroying ones, in view of Good Friday and Easter and with an eye to the life led by Jesus and his Sermon on the Mount."
