Hungarians neglect their health

Hungary's healthcare system puts too little money into prevention, writes the conservative commentator János Pelle in the online edition of the left-liberal weekly Heti Világgazdaság: "As far as life expectancy goes, Hungary occupies the 21st spot among the 27 countries of the EU. We've even been overtaken by Slovakia. ... Last year state healthcare expenditures accounted for 7.2 percent of the GDP. ... A survey carried out last year shows that Hungarians are not as unhappy with the healthcare system as the media would have us think. ... There is good reason to believe that the health of Hungarians would improve if more of the roughly two trillion forints [about 700 million euros] in annual healthcare expenditures went into education and prevention. ... Currently four percent of total expenditures is spent in these areas. This is low when you bear in mind how little many Hungarians know about matters of health."
