Child suicide must wake up Lithuanians

A nine-year-old boy has hanged himself in Lithuania because he could no longer bear the situation in his home and at school. The daily Lietuvos Rytas asks who is to blame: "The mother belongs in jail, the social workers should be fired and the teachers and pedagogues belong in the pillory: that's what we're now hearing from all sides. But let's be honest, such tragedies would happen less frequently if we were all more attentive. ... A few years ago Lithuania was shocked at the results of a Unicef study according to which parents in our country dedicate no more than seven minutes per day to their children, and that our children are the unhappiest in Europe. And that crisis hotlines for children have received 2.5 million calls in six months, most of them because the children feel alone and misunderstood. ... The tragedy of young Artūras must be an alarm signal for us all."
