Finnish restaurant day beats bureaucracy

Introduced two year years ago in Finland, Restaurant Day - on which anyone can offer their own specialities in improvised restaurants - took place once again on Sunday. The day is now being copied internationally. The liberal daily Keskisuomalainen is delighted at the success of the event, and its freedom from bureaucracy: "In the model democracy Finland, many good ideas have been nipped in the bud by the authorities and complicated procedures for obtaining permits. Restaurant Day is a refreshing, downright unbelievable exception! ... This event, which takes place four times a year, shows that a surprising number of us feel the need to bring people together with good food, and to experience a new sense of community. And when on top of that our own culinary arts are praised, it's the icing on the cake!"
