Euro no miracle cure for Latvian economy

The EU Commission announced on Monday that Latvia fulfils all the criteria for joining the Eurozone next year. The liberal daily Diena stresses that many problems still need to be dealt with in the EU's third-poorest country, arguing that the common currency can't solve these without joint action on the part of the country's leaders: "So many of our regions are economically underdeveloped. High energy costs make production hugely expensive, the education and health systems leave much to be desired. Our taxes are too high and joblessness is a problem although many employers have a hard time finding workers. The euro could solve many economic problems. Provided, that is, that Latvia's leaders join forces. Things will only improve in this country if the political class closes ranks."
