The recession is increasingly hitting women

As the global recession is increasingly affecting the service sector - and thus many careers dominated by women - more support measures are needed to help women, writes Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in a commentary for the daily Helsingin Sanomat: "Problems encountered by women can partly be dealt with through national rescue packages and concerted planning of protective measures. For example, the number of microloans on offer should be increased in most developing countries. They are highly important for the activities carried out by women in small and medium enterprises. ... It would also be good to reflect on whether the state should increase its support for firms that benefit national development, for example by supporting businesses managed by women."
