Turkey must spend more on education

In the OECD's ranking of education systems, Turkey brings up the rear along with Mexico and Chile. The government in Ankara must finally understand that in the long term the economy can only grow with an improved education system and a targeted employment policy, the liberal daily Taraf states: "It's not difficult to understand why we're behind in terms of employment when you consider that our Labour Ministry was founded in 1946, but the first strategic employment plan was drawn up in 2010. ... Turkey has to advance on two fronts: on the one hand it must boost employment above all for women and young people; but it must also promote the education and training of young workers. If we want to be competitive in the global economy, we need a more active and result-oriented cooperation between employers, the social partners and the government."
