Antwerp has its own drugs policy

The Flemish nationalist mayor of Antwerp, Bart De Wever, wants to make consumption of cannabis a punishable offence. At present the possession of up to three grams of the drug is tolerated in Belgium. The mayor is putting himself above the law with the ban, jurist and blogger Jan Nolf writes on the website of the left-leaning weekly paper Knack: "It's now pretty much clear that the mayor of Antwerp has not only made a big media splash à la Sarkozy. With this move he's also presented Antwerp as a querulous city state and set it apart from Belgium, from Flanders and above all from the rule of law. Bart De Wever has now given Antwerp's police the carte blanche that the Belgian Constitutional Court had forbidden, allowing them to freely interpret an unclear law. From now on, implementing this self-decreed ban on cannabis will mean a 'selection' on the city's streets and squares, and discrimination against the young, the black and the poor."
