Bulgarian men becoming better fathers

The number of Bulgarian men playing an active role in taking care of their small children has risen by almost 30 percent since the introduction of paternal leave in 2009. The daily Monitor notes this development with satisfaction: "On the one hand this shows that the assumption of the older generation that everything was better in the past is false. The younger generation divides the roles more fairly than traditional conceptions of the roles of mother and father. Secondly it shows that the EU's proposal made many years ago to introduce paternal leave was right and people are taking advantage of it. It also shows that the labour market is adjusting to families' needs, which in turn means that the family can maintain its high standing in Bulgaria. All this has a positive psychological impact on men, who become better fathers after taking paternal leave."
