Petr Nečas calls for new dialogue with Putin

After the elections in Ukraine everything must be done to stabilise the situation in the country and in all Eastern Europe, according to the conservative former Czech prime minister Petr Nečas. In a commentary in the liberal daily Mladá fronta Dnes, Nečas breaks the trend by calling for the lifting of sanctions against Russia: "When the Iron Curtain fell and the region was liberated and stabilised through its membership in Nato and the EU, the West was obliged to engage in dialogue with Gorbachev and Yeltsin. Whether we like it or not, now there can be no getting around engaging in dialogue with President Putin in order to stabilise Eastern Europe. And without sanctions, but on the basis of a partnership, which is definitely incompatible with the role of mentor. At the same time it also means the West must not lie to countries like Ukraine or Georgia, or make unrealistic promises regarding membership in Nato and the EU that we won't be able to fulfil in the foreseeable future. Instead we should concentrate on these countries' economic development and domestic stability."
