Luis Nazaré on rivalry between the Portuguese and Spanish

Luis Nazaré takes issue with the claim that all Iberians are the same in the business paper Jornal de Negócios: "Portugal and Spain are rivals, with all the advantages and disadvantages that entails ... particularly in economic terms. Strictly speaking we stand in opposition to the Castilians. Since the darkest Middle Ages right up to the present day of [football manager] Mourinho, we have always been irreconcilable in our pride and in our goals. Okay, there may be many similarities, starting with our way of life. This is probably the reason why we almost feel at home when we cross the border. Our languages are similar - in the case of Galician almost identical - and our passions too. But paradoxically we have never managed to form a convincing and serious economic cooperation. ... The centralist Castile won't renounce its imperial ranking. Madrid refuses to set aside its irritating arrogance. ... You could count the successful co-operations between Portuguese and Spanish companies on one hand. Spain hasn't got a clue about partnership - all it knows about is ruling. And on the Portuguese side, a sense of distrust naturally prevails."
