EU enlargement could be delayed

EU expert Adrienn Nász writes in her blog for the business paper Világgazdaság that EU enlargement will most likely slow down during the Swedish EU Council presidency beginning July 1: "Although the Swedes have always approved of EU enlargement, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt recently let on that it will be extremely difficult to progress with accession negotiations with Croatia and Turkey. ... In the case of Turkey the necessary reforms are not being implemented quickly enough. In the case of Croatia, on the other hand, the negotiations could slow down as a result of the border dispute with Slovenia. ... Turkey's accession promises to be especially difficult. The reason: in many EU countries right-wing extremists and anti-immigration parties have made massive gains in terrain. Many of these parties utterly reject Turkey as an EU member."
