Bulgarians victims of mafia thugs

Rumen Porozhanov, the director of Bulgaria's State Agriculture Fund, was severely beaten by thugs in front of his house in Sofia on Thursday. Presumably because he has fought against the abuse of EU agricultural subsidies, surmises the daily Standart: "The fact is that the Agricultural Fund has functioned exceedingly well since Porozhanov took over. Most agricultural projects that had been stalled have now been completed and the livestock farmers received their subsidies even before Christmas. The man does his job systematically and conscientiously. Perhaps someone wanted to get him involved in fraudulent dealings with EU funding and he refused, after which thugs were let loose on him to force him into submission. ... Hopefully the police will capture the perpetrators and give them what they deserve - as a warning to all those who believe criminal assault is part and parcel of doing business in Bulgaria. Ultimately the real victim here is not so much Porozhanov as the entire nation."
