Solana gave European foreign policy a face

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), has announced he will retire this autumn. Ten years were enough, he said in an interview. The daily Trouw is sorry to see him go. "When he … took up his position as the European Union's foreign policy chief he was immediately confronted with the consequences of the bombings and the aftermath of the war in former Yugoslavia. Peace in the Balkans is regarded as one of the successes of European foreign policy. … He gave the new office credibility among European politicians, and heads of state in and outside the European Union trusted him. … The famous joke made by diplomat Henry Kissinger in the 1970s that he didn't know who to call when he wanted to talk to Europe made the rounds for a long time. But that was before Solana, who became the benchmark for many ministers and heads of state."
