Gurlitt's legacy is a chance for Bern

The deceased Munich-based art collector Cornelius Gurlitt has bequeathed his entire controversial collection, valued at millions of euros, to the Kunstmuseum Bern. Switzerland shouldn't miss this opportunity even if some of the pictures were looted by the Nazis, the weekly paper Schweiz am Sonntag advises, making a proposal regarding what should be done with the art: "Even if the collection perhaps isn't as significant as hoped for art history, it is exemplary for the history of art trading in the last 80 years and the most spectacular post-war art find. Bern could become an art metropolis for a while, a place of pilgrimage for the world of art. Ideas and visions are needed. ... Would this not be an opportunity for Switzerland to build a big museum for 'degenerate art', using the Gurlitt collection as its basis? A museum where 'degenerate art' is shown and the looted works and Switzerland's contentious role are at the same time examined and reappraised."
