Documentary about Václav Havel

Just before tomorrow's presidential elections in the Czech Republic, a documentary which will also be screened at the Berlinale about Václav Havel, the country's former head of state of many years, is attracting many viewers to the cinema. A camera team accompanied Havel for more than 13 years. Not only Czech critics praised the film, their Slovak colleague Jakub Kudláč is enthusiastic as well. "The film demystifies the office of the president, which has been surrounded with an aura of superhuman perfection since the days of Tomas Masaryk. The authors present a president who is not perfect, who frequently voices doubts, who makes mistakes, who complains about how poorly his shirts fit and who does not hide his anxiety about a major operation. The film becomes a memorial to Havel's presidency. Unfortunately, the picture is somewhat uncritical. Nonetheless, it is an unusual document of an era, unusual above all for its openness and intelligent humour."
