Nečas acted immoraly, not criminally

Prime Minister Petr Nečas, who has now stepped down, is firmly in the sights of investigators looking into the Czech political scandal. Nečas is said to have ordered that three rebellious members of parliament be compensated with high-ranking posts in business if they agreed to give up their mandates. The liberal daily Mladá fronta Dnes casts doubts on the soundness of the accusations, finding that the investigators are chomping too firmly at the bit: "What is a political act, and what is a crime? Whether we like it or not, politics is always based on power interests and their implementation. That's the way things are. When is the political enforcement of power interests still 'morally' acceptable, and when isn't it? This question must certainly be taken seriously, but it cannot be answered definitively. It should be the object of a political, ethical, perhaps even a philosophical debate. But it certainly cannot be part of an indictment. If you thought that through to the end, every politician in the world would be corrupt."
