EU accession for Ukraine needs conciliation

In a joint declaration, Catholic bishops in Poland and high representatives of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine called on Friday for reconciliation and forgiveness between the two countries. The occasion is the 70th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres, in which roughly 100,000 ethnic Poles were killed by members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army during World War II. An important step in bringing Ukraine closer to the EU, the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita stresses: "At the end of their declaration the bishops clearly state that cooperation between Poland and Ukraine is indispensable for peace and the respect for human rights in Eastern Europe. They speak of a united Europe and the role played here by both states. In their view, Ukraine clearly belongs within the structures of the EU. This is an important gesture, and sends an important signal. Above all for Ukraine, which considers Poland its most important ally."
