Latvia loses a great poet

The Latvian poet Imants Ziedonis, considered one of the country's most eminent literary figures, died on February 27 aged 79. The conservative daily Latvijas Avīze praises the poet, and recounts a meeting with him a few years ago when he was already in poor health: "People were hugely important for Ziedonis, and for him happiness lay in a sense of order. Of course he was always open to us [journalists]. But his eyes spoke even more than his voice. ... Imants talked about how he loved to see animals in their mating antics in front of his window, and dreamed of being able to go once again to the blues club just down the street. He also wanted to write a book about his charming sister, who cared for him. You can't say it was a real interview. ... But a poet is always somewhere between heaven and earth."
