German president disrespects press freedom

German President Christian Wulff is still under attack for allegedly having tried to block German tabloid Bild from covering a controversial loan for his private home. He has disrespected press freedom and is therefore not worthy of his office, the left-liberal Süddeutsche Zeitung writes: "He is no longer the district administrator of Osnabrück or premier of Lower Saxony. He is the head of state. But Wulff is obviously out of his league in this post. ... In his 'I regret' performance before Christmas he extolled the merits of press freedom. But with his call to Bild (which at that point had not been made public) he wanted to prevent free coverage. When one reports on this incident it's not to defend a tabloid or its methods but to make it clear that a president cannot afford to disregard this constitutionally guaranteed freedom - no matter which chief editor he calls. ... A man who praises freedom of the press but doesn't respect it is not the right man to be president."
