Czechs finally rise up against Zeman

The celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution on Sunday in Prague turned into a massive protest against incumbent Czech president Miloš Zeman. For the conservative daily Lidové noviny this is the logical consequence of his recent remarks: "For a long time now the president has been testing the Czech people's nerves. Now they have taken to the streets to tell him what they think of him. It was logical that they used the 25th anniversary of the end of communism for this purpose. ... His opponents attacked not just his vulgarity but above all his provocative statements trivialising the brutal police crackdown on the demonstrations of 17 November 1989. The protests, first in Národní třída avenue and then in front of the Castle [the seat of the Czech head of state] serve to show that our civil society is a healthy organism that reacts to 'disease' and doesn't remain impassive."
