Coup in Burkina Faso is good for democracy

The army of Burkina Faso and the putschists close to former president Blaise Campaoré reached an agreement on Tuesday night for a five-point plan to put an end to last week's coup. The putsch will open the population's eyes, the Christian-social daily Le Courrier believes: "It shows them just how far the clan around the former president is willing to go to retain its hold on power. By approving this violent act, Blaise Compaoré's party has shot itself in the foot regarding the next elections (slated for November). ... We can assume that it will be more difficult for circles close to the former government to buy votes this time, as they did in the past. This coup could well be the death throes of a monster born of the assassination of president Thomas Sankara in 1987. Excellent news for the fledgling democracy in the 'land of the honest people'."
