Cave rescue operation gives us hope

For more than a week an international team of rescuers has been trying to evacuate a researcher from Germany's deepest cave. The discussion this has triggered about the cost of the rescue operation is inappropriate, the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung finds: "Because the costs of the rescue are practically zero, at least for the state. It's mainly private individuals who are organising and financing the operation. More cave rescue experts from the Alpine area have volunteered than fit in the narrow cave. Companies have donated expensive material for the complex logistics. The rescue operation in the Riesending cave is therefore more than just a media spectacle. What is so fascinating about it is the solidarity the rescuers are demonstrating. This solidarity is often missing in everyday life. So we follow every metre of the rescue operation glued to the screen. Because each metre of progress reassures us that the world is a good place after all."
