Croatian central bank must set the course

In interviews in recent weeks the governor of Croatia's central bank, Boris Vujčić, has repeatedly stressed the key role his institution has played in maintaining economic stability in the country. But in reality Croatia is sliding hopelessly into its sixth crisis year, the liberal daily Jutarnji List counters: "Stability is not everything and it's not enough. The public expects a lot more from those whose job it is to protect the currency. ... Six years after the crisis began the problems are of an entirely different nature. But what should be done? The central bankers are like adventurers who are sailing unknown waters and don't know which direction to take. They are convinced that they have accomplished a lot and now fear that it would do more damage than good to go any further. The public, however, generally expects the central banks to finally resume their role as the leaders of the economy."
