Poland no country for the young

Polish university graduates starting out in their careers earn an average gross salary of around 2,000 złoty (roughly 470 Euro), according to a recent survey by the opinion research institute TNS Polska. Poland is tossing away its future, 29-year-old journalist Agata Kinasiewicz writes in dismay in the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza: "How are young people supposed to lead independent lives and have children when they earn just a few cent? Yet the low salaries earned by those starting their careers are less a problem than the fact that their salaries don't rise as they gather more experience. ... I know five couples my age who want to have a child. But in today's world that's a daring enterprise. ... And we're talking about people who live in Warsaw and have graduated from a good university. What must things be like for young people in the small and medium-sized cities where the situation is even worse?"
