Good relations between Volkswagen and Škoda

Twenty years ago the German Volkswagen company entered into a partnership with the Czech carmaker Škoda which, according to the conservative daily Lidové noviny, has proved highly successful. "Škoda was clearly the better bride for Volkswagen than for [the then rival] Renault. The Germans had a clear vision and a much greater interest in the Czech firm. And they had experience from their strategic takeover and modernisation of the Spanish carmaker Seat. ... The Germans were able to behave themselves in the Czech Republic, find their feet, communicate and they did not turn up their noses at the people from the East. But of course they bought Škoda to make money. They used Czech subcontractors for cheap, good quality supplies for all their cars. From the outset their approach to the cooperation was systematic, reliable, and governed by the awareness that the project would only bring money in the long term."
