Don't judge Ukraine by Tymoshenko's case

The Ukrainian parliament postponed on Wednesday a vote on allowing the imprisoned former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko to leave the country. The decision puts the conclusion of an association agreement with the EU at risk, which is unfair, political analysts Marius Laurinavičius and Vytautas Keršanskas comment on the online portal "The upcoming decisions [at the EU summit] in Vilnius should not depend on the fate of the ex-prime minister. ... Even total compliance with the EU's conditions regarding Tymoshenko's release won't create a legal system that eliminates the problem of 'selective justice' in Ukraine. Therefore resolving the Tymoshenko problem - even as regards democracy, human rights and justice - is less important than the still unconcluded reforms of the public prosecutor's office and the electoral laws."
