Ankara leaving itself isolated

Following the publication of images that purportedly document Turkish secret service members smuggling weapons to Syrian rebels Turkey's public prosecutors have launched an investigation against Cumhuriyet, the paper that published them, and its chief editor Can Dündar. Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has even personally brought charges against Dündar and wants him to be jailed for life. For the Islamic-conservative daily Zaman the affair is further proof that the AKP government is isolating the country: "The reports according to which the government has been supplying weapons to radical groups in the Syrian civil war that has gone on for more than four years now, its attempts to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that is the counterpart to Nato, and also the renunciation of democratic values in the country all reinforce the theory that Turkey has turned its back on the West and is now focussed on the East. … But Turkey has lost almost all its friends not only in the West but also among its Islamic neighbours. There is no safe haven for Turkey anymore. It has lost its way and become isolated."
