Wałęsa encourages extreme nationalists

With his radical comments on homosexuals a few days ago, the Polish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa is playing into the hands of the country's nationalists, the liberal daily Helsingin Sanomat complains: "It's part of Wałęsa's image as a man of the people to say exactly what's going through his head. ... This time, however, he clearly went too far. ... The ideology of the extreme nationalist youth movement [in Poland] is based on the condemnation of homosexuals. According to this ideology, the fatherland must not be abandoned to liberal ideas. The latest tactic of the extremists is to disrupt university events on the topic of equal rights. For these hooligans, Wałęsa is the perfect mouthpiece. As Lech Wałęsa's son Jarosław says, his father has always thought that way. It's just that in the years after the fall of communism the last thing on the minds of Western democracy activists was to ask him what he thought about homosexuals."
