More rules for central banks pointless

After the resignation of the governor of the Swiss National Bank, Philipp Hildebrand, over an affair involving currency speculation, politicians from various Swiss parties have called for stricter regulations for members of the central bank's Governing Board. But this will hardly solve the problem, writes the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "The worst alternative would be to draw up a new and detailed set of regulations and then go back to business as usual. Less comfortable but far more enduring would be to consistently pursue the course already introduced, which started with the the SNB recognising the problem and admitting that certain mistakes had been made and ultimately led to the chairman of the Governing Board's decision to resign. Every change must depart from this mindset. Legal regulations can play a role in the process, but not an exclusive one and certainly not the most important."
