Kos needs doctors, not helicopters

The hospital on the island of Kos - birthplace of the father of medicine Hippocrates - is only offering limited services because it is understaffed owing to the austerity measures. Seriously ill patients are flown out to Athens or other locations. A scandal, the web portal Protagon complains: "Heli-transport is a neologism that has become part of the everyday vocabulary of locals over the past years. ... While all this sounds like a fairy tale, normal people are asking: how can a bankrupt state pay huge sums for helicopter transports but not for doctors, nurses or other hospital staff? 120 patients were heli-transported off Kos in 2011. Some say that figure may rise to over 180 this year. ... Millions of euros are taking flight, and the situation is only getting worse. One wonders if this sort of thing is happening in any other European country."
