Ranking fever rages in coverage of floods

The media have covered the floods in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary extensively, comparing the water levels with those of the so-called flood of the century in 2002. The left-liberal daily Der Standard finds this very annoying: "All the endless reeling off of figures on the current water levels, the maximum tolerance limits above which the water will finally flood over dams that have already been raised by so many centimetres for the umpteenth time, divided by the time it will take for the flood peak to get from Passau to Vienna. … However the decisive question here is: will this flooding eclipse the 2002 floods? … To call the flooding of 2002 a flood of the century is not very convincing because at that point the current century was only two years old, meaning that the title only applies if the remaining 98 years of this century aren't taken into account - an extremely bad basis for serious calculations."
