Gays live in fear in Lithuania

Only 22.7 percent of Lithuania's homosexuals openly profess their sexual orientation, whereas the European average lies at 39.7 percent. This was the result of an Internet survey published on Monday by the Lithuanian Centre of Infectious Diseases and HIV (ULAC). The web portal 15min sees this as a clear indication of the poor state of affairs in Lithuanian society: "These results show not only that very few homosexuals are prepared to openly admit their sexual orientation. Far more important is the context of these figures: 77.3 percent of homosexuals don't admit to their homosexuality because they are afraid of the negative reactions and of being judged in the workplace. … What we learn from this is that in Lithuania there are people who are afraid of each other and don't respect each other."
