Airstrikes could weaken Kurds

The US attacks on the IS have direct repercussions for Turkey's relations with the Kurds, columnist Hasan Bülent Kahraman writes in the pro-government daily Sabah: "I don't think that the US will fight this war through to the end. ... It's never won a war in the Middle East. These wars have only led to growing hatred and resentment. That was no doubt why President Erdoğan told the US that airstrikes would not be sufficient and that ground troops would be needed. ... But Turkey has a big problem. The Kurds in Kobane have allied with the PYD [the Kurdish party close to Turkey's PKK]. If Turkey arms them it would be arming the PKK. ... If the IS is now attacked that would improve Turkey's hand. And if the IS is pushed back it will calm the Kurds and prevent elements like the PYD from growing stronger."
