Ronaldo is the better individualist

The Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was nominated Fifa World Player of the Year on Monday, beating his rivals, the Argentinian Lionel Messi and Frenchman Franck Ribéry. This decision will be the subject of debate for some time to come, the conservative daily Lidové noviny predicts: "There are many who will criticise the selection of Cristiano Ronaldo. But can one really fault the triumph of a player who delivered some fantastic performances in 2013? After all, the 'Golden Ball' is a competition among the best individualists. Ronaldo shot more goals than Messi and Ribéry put together last year. It's hard to imagine what the results of Real Madrid or the Portuguese national team would have looked like without him. And the fact that he didn't win any of the team trophies in 2013 makes no difference here. Yes, we can discuss the prize, and whether it shouldn't have gone to Ribéry instead. But that's it. You can't take it away from Ronaldo any more."
