Condemned to compromise

The apparently insuperable language dispute is the cause behind the difficult coexistence of Flemish and French-speaking Walloons, writes the business paper Il Sole 24 Ore: "Government crises in Belgium traditionally begin suddenly and end gradually. The [Flemish-French] language knot is not a myth. It is an expression of power struggles, social-economic revanchism, a lack of cultural understanding and an uneasy coexistence for which however there is no convincing alternative in this globalised world and in a Europe that is breaking apart. The Flemish and Walloons know this. Just as they know that they are condemned to an eternal quest for compromises."
