Debate on EU exit burdens Cameron

The British parliament on Monday rejected a motion calling for a nationwide referendum on exiting the EU. Of the 111 votes in favour of the referendum roughly 80 came from the ranks of the ruling Tories. This means that despite the victory of the pro-Europeans Prime Minister David Cameron's leadership role is on the line, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera comments: "The result was only an apparent victory. The parliamentary attempt to stab Cameron in the back exposes the internal tensions over the prime minister's strategy and also the resentment many Conservatives feel about being forced into a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The rejection of the motion was predictable but the political significance of the action and its message remain: behind David Cameron's back there are rumblings, the number of the disgruntled is growing and they can count on support from the ranks of the government. Europe is an excuse for an internal vote among the Conservatives in parliament on David Cameron's leading role."
